Characters

Men

John Worthing (Jack):
Leading Man in the play. He refers to himself as Earnest in London and Jack in the country. He makes up an imaginary brother named Earnest to escape to the city when he wants. He is also in love with Gwendolen.

Algernon Moncrieff: Jacks best friend who has also made up a character call Mr. Bunbury that allows him to escape from London when he chooses.He is in love with Cecily.

Rev. Canon Chasuble, D.D: The rector who resides in the country with Jack. He has romantic feelings towards Miss Prism.

Lane, Manservant: Algernons' manservant. He goes along with all of Algerons lies.

Merriman, Butler: Butler in Jacks country home.

Females

Gwendolen Faifax: The daughter of Lady Bracknell. She is in love with Earnest (Jack). She often goes back on her previous convictions.

Cecily Cardew: Jacks Ward. She is 18 years old and resides in the country. She is in love with Earnest (Algernon) and has a very active imagination.

Lady Bracknell: She prides herself in her social class and worries herself over the social standing over who Gwendolen will marry. She is very concerned on what manners are fashionable.

Miss Prism, Governess: Cecilys' teacher. She also has romantic feelings towards Dr. Chasuble.
